Axe throwing, food trucks, concerts, art contests – it all went down Saturday at Spring Fling.
The event. sponsored by the JHop PTSA, drew more than 700 attendees, said member and event organizer Heather Ainsworth.
One of the top attractions at Spring Fling was the art contest where muralists from St. Petersburg competed against one another.
“I decided to do the art battle because it’s the best way to spend a Saturday. It’s a great community opportunity and a great way to inspire the next generation of upcoming artists,” Laura Spencer, a.k.a. Miss Crit, said.
One of the artists in attendance was the renowned Zulu Painter.
“A lot of great art and a lot of happy faces and a lot of community coming together,” he said. “That’s my favorite part.”
Assistant Principal James Wilbour said the event is a good example of the “spirit of community.”
Spring Fling is about family, friends, and community coming together to support out students,” he said. “It shows that were all working together for our students to do these great events.”
Sixth-graders-turned-vendors Ainsley Jones and Sofiia Shevtsiv hawked bracelets and felted and crocheted items adorned with animals like octopi.
“I thought it would be a cool experience, also I kind of want to like see what other people create,” Sofiia said
“I just wanted to tag along,” Jones said. “I think it’s really fun, I like how they give you an opportunity to sell things at your school.”
Egon Palmer, a seventh-grader, performed in the jazz band and orchestra.
“I get to show that I’m good at my instrument,” he said.
St. Petersburg resident Meg Palmsten attended Spring Fling to watch her scholar perform in the band.
“I really love it,” she said. “I like the performers. I love listening to the jazz band.”
