Girlfriends Club is all about turning girls into the leaders of tomorrow. Part of their mission is to help women in need, and they did that for Women’s History Month.
Last month, the Girlfriends Club collected personal care items for CASA, which runs shelters for women and their families who are displaced due to domestic violence.
A collection box was placed in each grade-level office for donors to give toiletry, hygiene and other items said club sponsor and ELA teacher Alexia Singletary.
“The Girlfriends Club Care Drive is our community service initiative for the month of March where the Girlfriends Club rallied alongside other students in our school to collect toiletry, hygiene and different items for families and victims of domestic violence at the CASA Shelter in Pinellas County,” Singletary said.
According to Singletary, items like socks and personal hygiene are not typically donated.
The club is committed to helping women who are trying to rebuild their lives, she said.
“Starting over often requires important things like hygiene items and those are items that are sometimes not donated often,” Singletary said. “If we could take the role by providing some of the easier items that is what we were going to do.”
Singletary thanked those who donated, especially social studies teacher Lisa Mackey. She said that the care drive showed how Trojans can make a difference in the community.
According to Singletary, the drive was a success. She said that boxes in the sixth-grade and eighth-grade offices were nearly full.
Girlfriend’s Club member and sixth-grader Braelyn Rose said she enjoys doing these types of projects.
“My favorite part of Girlfriends was that we get to learn about sisterhood and succeeding in life,” said Rose.
