John Hopkins Middle School’s Student Government is hosting a canned food drive starting the week of Feb. 16.
Donations of canned food and non-perishable items will benefit the charity organization Feeding Tampa Bay, because of the need for food after the holiday season, said Student Government sponsor Tracy Newman said.
“We know food is a need in our community,” she said. “It seems like [now] is a good time of the year to do that because people like donating a lot of food during the holidays.”
Ms. Newman and gifted teacher Crystal Robinson-Fisher are overseeing the food drive and members of SG are working alongside them to collect what is donated. Scholars are asked to bring canned soups and food to school and then donate at their morning greeting locations depending on their grade.
“There is no specific goal of food that we want to get we just want to get as much canned food as we can,” Ms. Newman said.
