Nearly 30 JHop scholars will represent the school after their projects for National History Day came out on top at last week’s competition.
National History Day is a nationwide competition where students can work individually or in a group to create exhibits, websites, documentaries, research papers or performances.
Students could choose any topic from before the year 2000 as part of this year’s theme of “Revolution, Reaction, Reform”.
History teacher Ms. Tracey Newman said it’s a chance for scholars to show what they know.
“Students find that if they can learn about the things in history they are interested in, it’s more fun,” she said.
Marley Larkin’s examination of the Great Depression effect on the food industry earned her first place in the individual exhibit.

Larkin said she felt “amazing” after being declared the winner.
Eighth-grader Anthony Lambert based his project on racial injustice.
“This project helped me see others’ point of view and when it comes to this type of history and see how people of our generation can stop it,” he said.
Top projects from JHop will go on to compete in the Pinellas History Day in Largo in March. Winners from Pinellas may go to state in May and state winners compete in nationals in June.
