Several sixth-grade theatre students performed at the International Thespians Society (ITS) Candidate Showcase earlier this month to earn membership in the nationally recognized society.
ITS is an honor society for middle and high school students that builds leadership and teamwork skills and is a gateway to state and national competitions. Induction requirements include performing or presenting work at the showcase, completing an ITS knowledge report, and participating in the spring musical. Once inducted, students become lifelong members.
ITS is a versatile experience for students, said theatre teacher Samuel Walker.
“Thespians unlock a door,” he said. “[Members] get to go to festivals, compete, attend workshops, potentially earn scholarships, and so much more.”
The showcase allows students not only to qualify for membership but also to demonstrate the time, effort, and dedication they put into acting.
Sixth-grader Amore Van Vranken said joining ITS is an important step toward pursuing her dream of acting.
“It means a lot to me because I love theatre and I love acting,” she said.
ITS also recognizes behind-the-scenes contributors. Sixth-grader Avion Akings presented his project during intermission and described his role as a stage manager.
“[Stage managers] go around the whole stage and make sure everyone is in check,” he said. “They have to plan the schedules.”
Preparation for the showcase gives students confidence on stage and helps them grow as actors. Sixth-grader Theadore Colton said he is grateful to ITS and the JHop theatre program for helping him improve.
“I’ve really been helped with enunciation and being able to yell,” he said.
