Halloween is upon us and with it are decorations, costumes and candy – specifically, candy corn.
Whether you like it or hate it, candy corn is everywhere. Just how popular is the tiny confection?
The National Confectioner’s Association reported more than 35 million pounds of the candy are eaten around Halloween.
While consumed by large volumes, it may not be the healthiest of snacks: According to Brach’s website – which claims to sell the most candy corn every year – one serving of candy corn has 23 grams of sugar with the total mass of the serving being about 45 grams, meaning half of the mass is sugar. This is a huge factor in candy corn’s sweetness.
Additionally, candy corn contains dyes like Yellow 5 and Red 3 which have been linked to cancer and dementia when taken in large amounts, according to the FDA. According to nutritionvalue.org, even though candy corn is high in sugar, it is fat free.
