A portion of the Gandy Bridge has been named after a former John Hopkins scholar who was among three people killed in a terrorist attack in Pensacola.
Mohammed “Mo” Haitham attended JHop from 2012 to 2014. He participated in 5000 Role Models and track.
He was also a standout track star at Lakewood High.
The U.S. Navy sailor was killed on Dec. 6, 2019, when a Saudi Arabian military student opened fire in a training facility onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola.
He was 10 days short of his 20th birthday.
Officials praised Haitham for running toward the sound of the gunfire. He distracted the shooter so that the other students could get out of the classroom.
The stretch of Gandy Bridge is now called the Mohammed “Mo” Haitham Memorial Highway.
Also, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has proclaimed each Dec. 6 as Naval Air Station Pensacola Remembrance Day in Florida in honor of the lives lost that that day.
