About The JHop Times
The JHop Times aims to fairly and honestly report the news, and to provide a forum for students, faculty and staff.
About Journeys in Journalism
Founded in 2001, Pinellas County Schools’ Journeys in Journalism program is a magnet program offered at Melrose Elementary School, John Hopkins Middle School, and Lakewood High School. Emphasis is on learning through doing, with students creating and publishing the JHop Times newspaper and various broadcast projects such as a morning show, school PSAs and special reports.
Students begin with the basics of reporting and move through topics such as ethics, newswriting, photography, video editing and live broadcast production. Each year our work is submitted for award consideration at the Florida Scholastic Press Association. We also hold an annual exhibition, Through Our Eyes, at The Studio @ 620 gallery, which provides students, families, neighbors and community leaders a chance to see students’ words and photographs professionally exhibited on the walls of an art gallery.
