Godzilla vs. Kong is an action Sci-Fi film directed by Adam Wingard, scheduled to release March 31^st, 2021.  As you probably guessed from the title, this movie will be pitting two pop culture icons against each other in an epic battle of monster vs. monster, King vs. King, God vs. God. This will be the fourth and possibly final entry in the Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse, which started  in 2014 with Godzilla and then continued with Kong: Skull Island, and then most recently, Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

Having an approximate budget of $200 million, Godzilla vs Kong is going to be one of the bigger releases of 2021. The trailer, recently released, already has a large amount of positive feedback from fans, hitting 20 million views just within the first day (it’s than 60 million as of February 2021). The movie is shaping up to be one of the big movies you can see in theaters, now that COVID-19 restrictions are loosening somewhat.

But Godzilla and Kong are not the only monsters in this film. This film will feature warbats (giant snake dragons), nozuki (giant bat monsters) and last but not least, the one and only Mechagodzilla! (who you can see in the trailer if you look hard enough). Long time Godzilla fans will recognize Mechagodzilla   one of Godzilla’s arch-rivals, who has appeared in countless Godzilla movies.

Not only do both Godzilla and Kong have quite the legacy behind them, but they also have history together. As a matter of fact, they already fought each other way back in 1962. So, this rematch has waited almost 60 years! The winner in the original movie was somewhat vague, but   popularly considered Kong, though many still consider it a tie. But what’s the point of watching these two fight each other if you don’t know their past and stories?

We will start with Godzilla. Having his film all the way back in 1954 (simply titled Godzilla ) as a metaphor for nuclear  , Godzilla’s movies have represented many different things over the sually almost always represent some other topic, whether it be nuclear destruction, pollution or the dangers of biological science or just an entertainment character.

Some of his films include, but are not limited to, Godzilla vs Destroyah, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Final Wars, with  most recent film being Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla, King of the Monsters (2019) which was the latest entry in the MonsterVerse and sets up Godzilla vs Kong. Godzilla has built quite the legacy with more than  35 films and countless games, comics and novels. Godzilla is undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures in pop culture.

King Kong, on the other hand, actually has been around longer than Godzilla. His first appearance was in 1933 (in a film simply titled King Kong)! Though Kong hasn’t had nearly as many movies as Godzilla, he is still quite the popular pop culture icon, being one of the original movie icons in the early days of film and cinema.

Some of Kong’s films include, but are not limited to, King Kong (Peter Jackson, 2005) and King Kong (1976). Kong’s most recent film, Kong: Skull Island (2016), introduced him into the monsterverse with Godzilla (2014) and set up the film Godzilla King of the Monsters, which set up Godzilla vs Kong. With Kong having 12 movies to his name and plenty of cameos and references in other movies, he is quite the big pop culture icon. He was even referenced in Jurassic Park. That’s how you know he is a big deal!

Like many other MonsterVerse films, Godzilla vs. Kong has managed to gather a large array of well-known actors to star in the battle of the century between two titans. Probably the most well-known actor from this film, known for her role as Eleven in Stranger Things, is Milly Bobby Brown. She’s making a return to her character, Madison Russell, from Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

Kyle Chandler is also making a return as Mark Russell from Godzilla King of the Monsters. Then there is Julien Dennison (most notable from his role in Deadpool 2 as Rusty Collings) who will be playing Josh Valentine. And last but not least, there’s Alexander Skarsgård (best known for his role in Big Little Lies as Perry Wright). He will be playing Nathan Lind.

In an interview with Collider, Alexander Skarsgård had this to say about the  “I’m having so much fun filming this movie, and the movie itself is quite fun and visually extraordinary. I am excited to see the final product of the film.”

The director of the film, Adam Wingard, had this to say about the film: “When we were first discussing making Godzilla vs. Kong, I took it upon myself to watch all of the Godzilla movies and most of the  , and it was quite the enjoyable experience. And it was only when I was re-watching the films that I realized the emotional stakes that you get from these monsters, especially as a kid, and I definitely want to eject some of that into the film so that you can really empathize, not just with the people, but the monsters as well.”

With the battle of the century so close, it’s hard to not get excited about such a monumental film! It is true that these movies don’t always make the most sense, or have the best acting and plot. Sometimes they don’t give enough attention to the people or the  though you are going to the film to see monsters, wouldn’t too many monsters be a good thing?

At the end of the day, this is just a giant nuclear lizard vs. a giant angry monkey, so just enjoy yourself. Do not criticize it like it wants to be an Oscar nominee, because it definitely will not be; it just wants to have fun.

Personally, I hope Godzilla defends his title as King of the Monsters and gets the win. Who do you want to win in this battle of the ages?
