Cheers to JHOP!
For the first time in 12 years, John Hopkins Middle School earned a “B” according to Florida’s most recent letter grading system.
Principal Britnee Scott credited the shift to teachers, students, and the community working together.
But Ms. Scott cautions against getting comfortable with a “B”. She wants everyone to strive for an “A”.
Ms. Scott said achieving an “A” grade will involve gifted students to improve their proficiency from 58 percent to 60 percent.
But teachers and staff will focus on all scholars, not just one group.
“In an effort to become an A we’re going to focus on all students on our campus,” she said.
Parents can help by making sure their scholars are prepared and on time. Additionally, they check their child’s grades and make sure they are doing their schoolwork. Parents also should follow Hopkins Happenings, a weekly email about what is going on in school, she said.
Miss Scott promises that when JHOP receives an A, students will get a big celebration, although she is vague on what such a celebration will include.
When students were asked about their ideas for a celebration they delivered promising ideas.
“I think it would be cool to have a free period or something in the auditorium,” said Khali Faulkner, an eighth grader.
When given the same question, Auriona Kennedy, another eighth grader, responded: “I would love to see better food options in the cafeteria for lunch”.
