What can you make with a slab of clay and a soda can?
If you’re a scholar in Monica Black’s class – a work of art!
Scholars recently created sculptures using facial features of their choice.
It starts with a rectangular slab of clay fitted around a soda can. This forms the base of the sculpture.
Next, bits of soft clay are fashioned into a mouth, eyes, eyebrows, and other details.
Scholars learned to use tools for “slipping and scoring,” a method of using liquid clay and creating marks on the clay. This makes the facial features stick to the main piece.
Ms. Black says this project focuses on techniques of hand-building and reinforcement of structures.
Scholars say art classes let them express their creativity by giving them a chance to try out lots of projects.
Eighth-grader Mina El Boube called the project a “a really good learning experience.”
“It shows that you can make other things with clay instead of just mugs,” she said.
Seventh-grader Serenity Ruoff concurred.
“It gives us freedom to choose what we want to do instead of limiting to just one project,” she said.
