Hanukkah is a Jewish festival lasting eight days.
The holiday, often called “the Festival of Lights,” is usually in early December. This year it begins on the evening of Dec. 25.
Hanukkah celebrates a military victory of Jews over foreign rulers in the year 160 BC.
It is observed for eight days to mark the miracle of an oil lamp that had only enough oil supply to burn for one day when the Jewish army recaptured the holy temple in Jerusalem.
Surprisingly, it burned for eight days.
To celebrate, people light candles on a candlestick called a menorah for eight nights.
Customs include treats like jelly doughnuts and chocolate coins; songs; games; festive meals; and gifts to children.
