Did you go see “Halloweentown” in the cafeteria, “Monsters, Inc.” in the auditorium, or play games in the media center in October? If you did, you then attended a PBIS event. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. At John Hopkins, the program is designed to give scholars a variety of entertainment as a reward.
“We want to promote positive behavior on campus, so we are trying to reward students who do the right thing,” said John Frascatore, the eighth-grade assistant principal who oversees PBIS. “A lot of the time, we know that students who do the right thing get overlooked while the students who get in trouble get more attention. So PBIS is our way to reward them,” Mr. Frascatore said.
To participate in monthly PBIS events, scholars cannot have any referrals, detentions or suspensions for that month.
According to ESE Department Head Jill Jeffers who coordinates the events, upcoming celebrations include a scholars vs. faculty/staff basketball game, bingo games, “Holiday Elf and Dance,” an eighth-grade showcase and band concerts.
