The Belleview Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater is a very haunted hotel and Florida’s largest wooden structure. It was built in 1897 by Railroad Tycoon Henry B. Plant. The hotel grew better and more popular over many years. Henry B. Plant’s son, Morton Plant took over the hotel when his father died. He not only took over he also painted the hotel white and changed the roof tiles to green. Since it was painted the hotel was given a nickname “White Queen On The Gulf”. An Olympic sized pool was also added. Morton died in 1918 but that didn’t stop the hotel from growing more popular. Guests such as the Stude Baken and the DuPonts went there. There was also golf courses at the hotel. The hotels golf courses hosted some of the most famous athletes in the country such as Babe Ruth. The hotel continued thriving through the Great Depression until World War II when the hotel was requisitioned by the US Army Air Corps to house troops training at nearby airfields. After World War II the property was restored and opened back up once again in 1947 but under the name of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel instead of the Biltmore Hotel. The Biltmore Hotel has tunnels under the building. The tunnels were used for workers or/ and slaves to use so they wouldn’t be seen by others back in the day. The tunnels still exist to this day but are not used for that purpose anymore. There is also a heart shaped tree in front of the hotel.
